This Meinl CAX3 is a large caxixi, which is a percussive instrument that is often used in combination with a berimbau in capoeira music, for instance. The instrument originated in West Africa, but today it is also used extensively in South America, particularly in Brazil. The CAX3 is made of rattan strands, with a bottom made of coconut. Rattan is a vine-like wood type that grows on rattan palms in subtropic regions. When you shake your caxixi, you get a high-pitched rattling noise, reminiscent of the sound maracas make, making it an excellent instrument to use in keeping time and supporting a beat.
